"Brain injuries aren't a joke. They're scary." - Melanie's Survivor Story

"I have suffered from 3 concussions, all from baksetball. I got my first one when I was in 8th grade, and my second during my freshman year if high school. 2 years later, I was just finally starting to feel like I was past all of the medication, doctors appointments, and fearing getting another concussion, but then it happened, unlike either of my 2 past concussions. It was scarier because after I started playing sports after my first 2, I had always feared the day. I knew it would come eventually. Everyone told me it would (especially with my luck). It was worse than the other two. While still recovering from my 3rd and most recent concussion, I've been seeing the symptoms that I had always feared. The memory loss is worse than ever, the head aches wake me up in the middle of the night, and dizziness makes me afraid to stand up too quickly. Sports have always been apart of my daily life and the past few months haven't been the same. Brain injuries aren't a joke. They're scary. Forgetting what you ate 2 hours earlier, forgetting what you're talking about midsentence, and forgetting when your little brother's birthday is, is SCARY. As a junior in high school I have made the decision to never play contact sports again. I say that with out tears in my eyes because it really hasn't set in yet. It's always been something I've feared but I never thought I'd be me. I've learned at a young age that this is MY brain; we don't get a new one when we damage that one we have too much. I have to deal with the 3 different TBI'S for the rest of my life and it's not worth another one. I'm only 17 and this whole experience has made me a lot more grateful than a lot of others at my age ever will be. Thank you for letting me share my story and taking the time to read it." -Melanie, TBI Survivor ••• ➡️Share your story for#braininjuryawarenessmonth!
